Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Benicar is often prescribed because it is extremely effective for lowering blood pressure. However, gastrointestinal side effects have been reported. In April 2014, the Food And Drug Administration required that the manufacturer of Benicar put that the drug could potentially cause gastrointestinal side effects on the label.

Weight loss, stomach pain and diarrhea are some of the most commonly reported gastrointestinal side effects of Benicar. These symptoms are similar to the ones patients with celiac disease experience. Celiac disease is a type of intestinal disorder that is caused by a wheat allergy. Doctors will perform tests in order to rule out celiac disease. Patients often find that their symptoms improve after they stop taking Benicar.

Possible Hospitalization

Some patients suffer from unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms for years. Many of these patients require hospitalization because they lose an unhealthy amount of weight. Additionally, some people go from doctor to doctor before they finally get an answer to what is causing their symptoms.

Mayo Clinic Research

Mayo Clinic contacted the Food And Drug Administration in 2012 because they found a link between Benicar and gastrointestinal symptoms. They saw 22 patients who had symptoms of Celiac disease while taking Benicar. However, when the patients were tested for celiac disease, the researchers found that none of the patients had it. The researchers stated that Benicar should be used with care because it can cause gastrointestinal problems.

What Are Some Of The Other Possible Side Effects

In addition to gastrointestinal side effects, Benicar can cause a variety of other unpleasant side effects. Some of these side effects include arthritis, rash, irregular heartbeat, skin swelling, hair loss and chest pain. It can also cause kidney failure, which can potentially be life-threatening.

Black Box Warning

Benicar has a blackbox warning for fetal toxicity. This is the strongest warning from the Food And Drug Administration. Women who take this drug while they are pregnant can potentially harm their unborn child. Pregnant women should not take Benicar. As soon as a woman finds out she is pregnant, she will need to stop taking this medication. However, this should be done under the care of a physician.

Benicar Lawsuits

People who suffer side effects while taking Benicar not only suffer physically, but they can also suffer financially. Many patients are required to undergo long and difficult treatments in order to ease their symptoms. That is why many people are opting to file a lawsuit in order to get compensated for their pain and suffering.

George Williams is one of the many people who have suffered adverse side effects due to taking Benicar and are opting to file a lawsuit. He suffered severe intestinal damage after taking Benicar and was forced to stay in the hospital for over three months.
Because of the extent of the intestinal damage, he has to use a feeding tube. Williams and his attorney have accused the Benicar makers of concealing the dangers of their drug.

What Is Benicar?

Benicar is a prescription medication that was first approved by the Food And Drug Administration in 2002. It is estimated that over 11 million prescriptions have been written for this drug ever since it was first approved. The generic name for Benicar is olmesartan medoxomil. This medication is designed to help treat hypertension, which is better known as high blood pressure.

Benicar helps lower blood pressure by causing the blood vessels to dilate. It may be used along with other anti-hypertensive drugs. This medication belongs to a class of medications known as angiotension II receptor blockers. Angiotension II is a protein that causes the blood vessels to narrow, which raises blood pressure. Benicar blocks angiotension II, which stops the blood vessels from constricting. As a result of this, the blood is able to flow more freely.
